The Millside Flock was established in 1997 following the purchase of 75 quality females at Gaerwen and 2 top class rams at Carlisle, one from flock 809 and the other from flock 333.
The flock is MV accredited and is a member of the National Scrapie Plan and now has 250 ewes, mainly the progeny of some of the top flocks in the country. Selection has always been on breeding well grown sheep with tight skins and good conformation. The lleyns are reared on an all-grassland farm in SW Scotland alongside a flock of pedigree Rouge and Blue Texel sheep.
Lambing takes place late March/early April, the ewes being housed only for convenience, and are turned out as soon as possible following lambing – weather permitting. Most ewe lambs are retained for a further year and are over-wintered on grass only at a nearby dairy farm.
Ram lambs retained for Shearlings are housed in December and turned out prior to lambing to allow extra accommodation.
Present stock rams are from Emrys and Dylan Jones – flock 599, purchased Carlisle 2003 for 1800 guineas. and Messrs DN Bennett & Son – flock 893 – purchased Ruthin 2004 for 4500 guineas and another from the same flock at Ruthin 2006 for 1620 guineas.
Progeny from the Millside flock is available annually both at Society sales and privately and over the last few years we have enjoyed great success.
Last year was an exceptional year for Millside females, topping the Ewe and Lamb trade at Carlisle spring sale and gaining the top price for Gimmers at Perth, Castle Douglas and Skipton, the best being at Skipton which sold at £212 each for the Female Champions and at Carlisle to a top of £200 and £150 as well as £140 twice at Ruthin.
Rams have also been in demand, last year selling to a top of 2200 guineas following successes in recent years including 4600 guineas for the Male Champion at Carlisle in 2002 and more recently another Shearling ram at 4500 guineas.
Private sales of Shearling rams, Shearling ewes and Ewe lambs can be agreed should present restrictions due to Foot and Mouth prevent Society Sales taking place
You are welcome to view the flock, but only by prior arrangement. Strict bio-security measures are in force and must be adhered to by visitors

Cragg Farm is home to 420 pedigree Lleyn sheep. The flock of Lleyn ewes was established in 1994 and now we only have Lleyn sheep on the farm.
We breed the majority of the ewes pure with Lleyn rams around 40 ewes are put to the Texel ram to produce some quality Lleyn X Texel prime lambs.
The farm is 125 HA and is all in classified severely disadvantage, the farm is also in the Lake District ESA scheme.
We have been impressed by the Lleyn for her mothering ability, hardiness and milkiness. Our foundation stock was purchased at the Society sales in Gaerwen, Anglesey , our aim was to breed a medium sized ewe with conformation and a good tight skin. Over the years breeding from those ewes we have been able to breed the type of ewes that we were looking for. When choosing the ewe lambs to retain in the flock we are looking for breed correct lambs with conformation, good skins, good mouth and of reasonable size.
Stock rams have been purchased from John Geldard, John Johnson and Simon Kavanagh all rams used are scrapie tested R1s.
We sell stock at Ruthin, Castle Douglas, Carlisle & Skipton Society Sales and Rams at the Kelso Ram sale.
Our flocks are Scrapie Monitered, MV Accredited and we are a members of the National Scrapie Plan.
Inspection of the Flock is welcomed
